What I’m Buying vs. Reusing for My Second Baby
I am in the middle of my third trimester, which means I am in full nesting mode over here. But, in all honesty, I made a shopping list the very day I found out I was pregnant with my second baby… So perhaps I’ve been nesting since day one.
Luckily, it’s much easier the second time around, because you know what you like and what products worked for your family. The main decision-making work is figuring out what you can reuse from your first baby, and what new items you want to buy. Here is a summary of what I decided on!
What I’m Reusing for Baby #2
You can find most of what I bought (or wanted to buy) for my first baby in my Baby Registry Basics post. To save money, we obviously want to reuse as much of it as possible. Some of our favorite essentials that definitely fall into this category are:
- Car seat
- Bouncer/baby seat
- Clothes
- Swaddles
- Smart baby monitor
- Portable sound machine
- Portable bassinet
- Bottles*
- Bottle warmer
- Burp cloths
- Milk saver*
- Hand pump*
- Nursing pillow
- Baby bath tub
*A note on milk-related items: Based on my research and my own personal risk tolerance, I am planning to sanitize and reuse bottles & parts, breast pump parts, silicone milk catchers, pacifiers, etc. Some people choose to entirely replace these items for hygienic reasons. I am no expert, so don’t just take my word for it… Please do your own independent research before making your decision. 🙂
What I’m Buying for Baby #2
Needs
- Because my first is still in a crib…
- Another crib
- Another crib mattress
- Extra mattress covers
- Extra crib sheets
- Another travel crib
- Because my first is still in diapers…
- Another changing table
- Another changing pad
- Extra changing pad covers
- Separate diaper cream
- Separate diaper cream applicator
- Another diaper pail
- Size 1 diapers & more wipes
- Double stroller & car seat adapter
- Extra sound machine
- Extra baby monitor camera – We are planning to reuse the Nanit for the newborn because of its smart breathing technology, but we still want to have two radio monitor cameras so that we can have a camera on each child. As much as we love the Nanit, we chose to double up on the radio monitor because it is slightly more reliable and works better for babysitters.
Wants / Upgrades
- Better baby carrier – This upgrade seems worth it because I know I’ll need my hands free even more this time around, since I’ll also be chasing around a 2-year-old.
- Bigger diaper bag – I feel like mine is already overflowing with only one child, so I’d like to get a bigger one.
- Magnetic Me gowns & sleepers in small sizes – We learned about this amazing brand too late last time around, so now we want to stock up on smaller sizes, when we especially need the benefit of easy magnets!
- Better breast pump & parts – Simply because it’s covered by my insurance. 🙂
- Lactation warmer/massager – I’ve heard great things about this, and I’m VERY interested.
- Car seat magnets – I mean… where have these been all my life?!
I am also buying some new household items and decor to build out a second bedroom for Jackson. Such as: another dresser, laundry hamper, mirror, lamp, bookshelf, etc. This just happens to be our situation; be sure to think through yours, and then include it all in your second-baby budget.
Congrats and good luck! What are you buying for baby #2?
