The Baby Monitor We Could Not Live Without

Nanit baby monitor above crib

If any of you were paying close attention, I mentioned in my recent blog post about what I’m buying for my second baby that I wasn’t planning to buy a second Nanit baby monitor to follow Jackson to his toddler room, and that I would just use it for the newborn. But then one week later in my pictures of the toddler room, what do you see above the crib? Yes, a Nanit baby monitor...

The truth is, we caved. After ONE NIGHT of having our toddler in his new room without it, my husband and I simply missed the Nanit so much that we decided to purchase another.

Now, we have another baby monitor—a radio video monitor that is great and reliable and what we give to babysitters. But it can hardly compare to the benefits of the Nanit

Benefits of a Wi-Fi Baby Monitor

For one thing, we prefer a wi-fi baby monitor to a radio baby monitor for the following reasons:

  1. Access to monitoring the baby on your phone is far more convenient. It’s one less thing to carry around as you walk around the house, and you’re not going to forget to bring the monitor downstairs or upstairs (which, trust me, happens every. single. night.).
  2. You can monitor your baby while you are out of the house. This is especially helpful if you have some sort of time-constraint (ex. you want to get home for a feeding shortly after he or she wakes up).
  3. You can monitor your baby when they are with other caretakers.
  4. Always having the same level of access to the monitor between partners (because it’s on your phone) will help you parent jointly. With a radio monitor, only one person can physically have the monitor at once, thus only one person can truly be “on call”. The even access means more even responsibility.

Why We Love the Nanit Baby Monitor

The Nanit baby monitor goes above and beyond your typical wi-fi baby monitor, though. It is high-quality and has smart technology that provides many benefits to new parents, such as:

  1. The camera provides a much clearer picture of what’s going on in the crib than most other baby monitors.
  2. The Breathing Wear technology monitors your baby’s breathing and alerts you if it becomes irregular. (This gave us so much peace of mind when Jackson was little and we were worried about SIDS!)
  3. The Nanit Insights technology records what time your baby falls asleep, wakes up, etc. This is so helpful for gauging wake windows, especially if your baby wakes up before you. (Instead of waking up in a panic because you’re thinking, “How long has my baby been whining/crying?!” you can just check the monitor and see exactly how long it’s been and respond accordingly.)
  4. The Nanit Insights technology also summarizes your baby’s sleeping patterns and offers helpful, age-appropriate tips for ways to improve sleep. It addresses very specific aspects of sleep, such as sleep onset, number of nighttime visits, sleep efficiency while in the crib, etc.
  5. The app will send you push notifications when there is sound or motion detected in your baby’s crib. This allows you to turn the baby monitor volume down or off for a time. (And you can customize the sensitivity of these alerts, or turn them on and off, if you want.)
  6. You can save video clips of events in your child’s crib from the app. Those can be very fun and special to look back on!
  7. You can purchase a Nanit multi-stand that will convert the camera into a “nanny cam” or a general household monitoring device when your child is done with the crib.

Why It’s Worth It

We stick to a “routine” in this household, which is essentially a schedule with flexibility. Jackson has a set naptime and bedtime, but they can move earlier or later depending on what he needs on any given day.

The beauty of Nanit baby monitor is that it helps us identify what those needs are by automatically recording sleep times. So the Nanit essentially empowers me to make more educated decisions for facilitating better sleep for my child. Sleep is SO important; it’s one of the most critical things for a child’s growth and development. Not to mention that we as parents also value our own sleep! So the Nanit is really one of my most valued baby products, and I truly feel like it is worth every penny.

Trust me. You will not regret it. I’m all about a budget, but this is one of those items worth saving for. 🙂
